Critique: we need a clear focus and a clear message about what we are doing in conflict. When we tell people that our job is to help them resolve outstanding issues or to achieve social or systems change, that message is clear, and we can be held accountable to it. When we say our goal is to encourage empowerment and recognition, and that out of that will arise the greatest likelihood that a transformation will occur, we are also clear about our purpose. When, however, we say our goal is to help people engage in conflict, we encounter several problems. This goal is more abstract. Disputants will find it harder to know whether, when, and how to use us. Our efforts, therefore, to market our services will be more complicated. And, perhaps most important, we will be operating counter to the instinct of most parties to do the opposite—that is, to disengage from conflict.
